Not a Pillow: Marimekko

May 30th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

Sheer applique panel. Not made for my window.

But I wish I had made them for my windows.

Areas of the fabric are cut away to let more light in.

These have a center draw for the front of a vanity.

Surging on the back side so you see both black and white threads on the front.

A curtain panel and pair of curtains that I made for a local designer. This is from a vintage 60’s Marimekko panel that I had stored away for six or seven years. The shorter curtains (23 x 29 ea) were done for below a vanity. The top single panel (54 x 78) was made for a window next to the vanity. It is applique on a thin Indian cotton. Let the light in!

1945

Much happened in 1945. This is vintage Abacá textile panel that I pieced together into a 18 x 18 pillow.

Red Pillow

It’s never too late to be what you might have been. George Elliot via (thanks) Nora Walker.

Sometimes the backside is the best side. One more pillow made for Barbara from the reversed fabric of an ugly pillow cut in to strips and repatterned. Turquoise leather loop.

F Your Sofa

May 10th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

A pillow I made for the exhibit this week at Hallworth. I’m not sure what’s going to be included — but this one cracks me up. Machine embroidery and piecework of a 1960’s linen and cotton dress. Linen back and invisible zipper. 18″ x 18″

Modern Pillow

The front was surged together from several smaller pieces. Gunta Stölzl’s textile designs came to mind when I was making this pillow– at least that is what attracted me to the fabric when looking through all of Barb’s textiles while I was in Spokane. The back of the pillow is a nubby linen with an exposed mint green zipper and sky blue leather loop. You can see that Barb is in the middle of designing some raised beds for her back yard (which I am excited to see because Barb is an excellent mosaic artist and I am looking forward to seeing what she comes up with) and it adds a nice contrast to these pictures.

Today I dropped off 7 new pillows at Hallworth for an exhibition that I am part of. It is for the Legends of La Cienega Event this week. The exhibit is Friday and Saturday and below is the blurb about it from the website. Come check out my pillows in person!

Mother’s Day Pillow

May 8th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

My Mom usually gets cut flowers for Mother’s Day– but this year the flowers are on a pillow.

Being retired and taking up hobbies– my mom’s most recent has been shopping at antique and thrift stores to find me textiles. The pillow above was a little 8″ x 10″  cross stitch that she found–probably not planning for me to cut it up in pieces when she asked me to make them into a pillow–I surged it to a lavender linen. The welt was a bright white that I dyed and added a machine stitch. 18″ x 18″.

Pillow: Happy Barn Yard Fun

May 6th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

The Pig Gives up the Cow.

The happy animal barn yard theme was created by some romantic who spent little time on an actual farm. And it wasn’t me. I found several little needlepoints thrifting in Spokane. I made this pillow while Barbara was out working in the greenhouses and since her humor is like mine, it was a hit.  The hearts were part of the original. I added the chicken and fish and steak!

Cushion Tops

May 5th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

PILL– I kept thinking– PILL when I was making these. Maybe it was just the little woven pill motif in this vintage cotton fabric or maybe it was a desire for a Xanax.

Rufus was art directing these shots and is seen in photo number 1. Barbara is going to paint the stools out to a nice grey-blue in a satin finish.

Kerchief Pillow

May 4th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

My friend Barbara the landscape architect loves Carhartt and here’s a pillow that proves it. She found this kerchief at a thrift store when I was visiting her this past week in Spokane. We found the heart resist dyed fabric for the back right next to it. I cut them into stripes and surged them together and washed it to fringe the ends.
