Cupcakes vs. Donuts

When I think of sweets, I want immediate emotional gratification and I want it deep fried. I want a donut. In Los Angeles it’s California Donuts open 24 hours thank you very much. If I am talking about the perfect of most Perfect Donuts, they are found in Cardiff by the Sea at VG Donuts. When I drive to San Diego, I always leave enough travel time to stop by VG and have a raised crumb donut outside where there is a view of the ocean and slim tan surfer boys.

As cupcakes go, their visual appeal never quite wins out over the taste of something deep fried. Reports say that Magnolia Bakery is to open in Los Angeles at the end of week. I took the photos above Monday morning of their very charming store front. Magnolia Bakery, famous also for their waits-in-lines out the door that always killed my buzz. For all of you cupcake lovers, hopefully the line will be short or at least shaded.

 Bird in Space, Brancusi

Brancusi’s Golden Bird

The toy
become the aesthetic archetype

As if
some patient peasant God
had rubbed and rubbed
the Alpha and Omega
of Form
into a lump of metal

A naked orientation
unwinged unplumed
the ultimate rhythm
has lopped the extremities
of crest and claw
from
the nucleus of flight

The absolute act
of art
conformed
to continent sculpture
— bare as the brow of Osiris —
this breast of revelation

an incandescent curve
licked by chromatic flames
in labyrinths of reflections

This gong
of polished hyperaesthesia
shrills with brass as the aggressive light
strikes
its significance
The immaculate
conception
of the inaudible bird
occurs
in gorgeous reticence
