Our Undine Pillow |
Detail of the hand embroidery. |
Pontius Design one of a kind pillows can now be found at Gary Gibson on Beverly in Los Angeles. The above pillow was made by me out of a late 19th c European homespun linen and embroidered with vintage cotton thread.
The quote is from my favorite Edith Wharton novel, Custom of the Country. Wharton describes her main character Undine as being fiercely independent and yet passionately imitative…
She wanted to surprise every one by her dash and originality, but she could not help modelling herself on the last person she met, and the confusion of ideals thus produced caused her much perturbation when she had to choose between two courses.
These fragments had been hanging out for a couple years so I made some patchwork pillows. |

Broke my camera and these are from my droid. |
Much happened in 1945. This is vintage Abacá textile panel that I pieced together into a 18 x 18 pillow.
It’s never too late to be what you might have been. George Elliot via (thanks) Nora Walker. |
Sometimes the backside is the best side. One more pillow made for Barbara from the reversed fabric of an ugly pillow cut in to strips and repatterned. Turquoise leather loop.
A pillow I made for the exhibit this week at Hallworth. I’m not sure what’s going to be included — but this one cracks me up. Machine embroidery and piecework of a 1960’s linen and cotton dress. Linen back and invisible zipper. 18″ x 18″
The front was surged together from several smaller pieces. Gunta Stölzl’s textile designs came to mind when I was making this pillow– at least that is what attracted me to the fabric when looking through all of Barb’s textiles while I was in Spokane. The back of the pillow is a nubby linen with an exposed mint green zipper and sky blue leather loop. You can see that Barb is in the middle of designing some raised beds for her back yard (which I am excited to see because Barb is an excellent mosaic artist and I am looking forward to seeing what she comes up with) and it adds a nice contrast to these pictures.
Today I dropped off 7 new pillows at Hallworth for an exhibition that I am part of. It is for the Legends of La Cienega Event this week. The exhibit is Friday and Saturday and below is the blurb about it from the website. Come check out my pillows in person!
