Mother’s Day Pillow

May 8th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

My Mom usually gets cut flowers for Mother’s Day– but this year the flowers are on a pillow.

Being retired and taking up hobbies– my mom’s most recent has been shopping at antique and thrift stores to find me textiles. The pillow above was a little 8″ x 10″  cross stitch that she found–probably not planning for me to cut it up in pieces when she asked me to make them into a pillow–I surged it to a lavender linen. The welt was a bright white that I dyed and added a machine stitch. 18″ x 18″.

Cushion Tops

PILL– I kept thinking– PILL when I was making these. Maybe it was just the little woven pill motif in this vintage cotton fabric or maybe it was a desire for a Xanax.

Rufus was art directing these shots and is seen in photo number 1. Barbara is going to paint the stools out to a nice grey-blue in a satin finish.

Kerchief Pillow

My friend Barbara the landscape architect loves Carhartt and here’s a pillow that proves it. She found this kerchief at a thrift store when I was visiting her this past week in Spokane. We found the heart resist dyed fabric for the back right next to it. I cut them into stripes and surged them together and washed it to fringe the ends.

Here are the bolsters I mentioned the other day. Another Swat Valley embroidery. I used part of a embroidered section to make a little flange. Invisible zippers. 6″ Dia x 21″ Going to Spokane today; going to be making some pillows!

You may remember this fabric that I found several months ago–a vintage Joseph Magin dress. Today, I found this raw silk and metallic fabric which I thought perfecto for the back. 15″ x 15″. Invisible zipper and white leather loop.

Custom – F’d up

April 21st, 2011

These were some pillows I did a ways back. The instructions were to make Euro shams 26″ x 26″ that were fucked up and girlie. It was my first departure into the land of lightly guided instructions. But they loved them. Ding Ding!

Pillow Front Applique

April 20th, 2011

Daniel Pontius

The kind of tan fabric was a  bright orange 1970’s linen. The bright pink appliques were red. Bleach.

I had made a pillow out of the tan but never liked it.

so I took it apart and appliqued the old pillow front to the new blue linen front.

And did lots of cut away and top stitching.

This is something that I have been working on in between making bolsters for a client. Have you ever made bolsters? Boy are they fun! Kinda fun, it was fun to figure out how to do it and then do it. When sewing it helps (as with many things) to take your time, break it down into smaller steps. And if you feel your self rushing to finish, stop.

Phulkari Pillows

Daniel Pontius

These are some phulkari pillows that I did for Pat McGann Gallery. I’ve not finished any of my own designs up lately as I’m in the middle of a large group of custom pillows and a table cloth and some curtains.

Do you remember my needy friend? I just came across her again, so I thought I’d take more pictures. Just because, you are so pretty!
